Devi JenaRose, 7 years old
Arms crossed. Curled sideways into a chair. Eyes wide open — watching everything, belonging nowhere. That was me. I grew up being called too wild, too much. A bull in a china shop.
They compared me to the neighbor girls, the cousins — anyone who seemed easier to understand than I was. I was teased and called "Powder" — after the movie character born albino with spectacular intuitive gifts that no one around him could hold. The teasing didn't stop in childhood. It followed me into adulthood.
I had no reference point for normal. No matter how hard I tried to fit in.
I couldn't find my way. So I collected masks instead. Literally. I had a whole wall of ceramic masks. What I didn't know then was that I wasn't broken. I was unmasked in a masked world. I received initiations from five lineages. I built a Global Sisterhood that now spans five continents and is growing. Then I wrote a book. It didn't have a category. So I created one.
