What Is Shadow Burnout?
In Jungian psychology, the Shadow is the part of the self that has been pushed out of conscious awareness — not because it is bad, but because at some point, it was not safe or acceptable to be seen. For high-achieving women, the Shadow often contains their most authentic instincts: the wants they have learned to dismiss, the boundaries they override, the parts of themselves that do not fit the role.
Shadow Burnout is what happens when you have been managing the gap between who you are and who you are performing for long enough that the management itself becomes the primary exhaustion. You are not tired from your work. You are tired from the constant overhead of maintaining a version of yourself that is not quite you.
